HHC-H is a synthetic cannabinoid from the hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) family, distinct from both CBD and THC. In spring 2024 it was drawing a lot of attention from cannabis consumers and from the trade. A few weeks after this article was first published, in May 2024, France banned it: HHCH was one of the molecules prohibited from 3 June 2024. Here is what the compound is, how it was marketed and what its story tells a retailer.

Several of these substances are classified as narcotics in France and in other European countries, and their status changes quickly. Check the law in your own country before buying or reselling anything of this kind.

What is HHC-H?

HHC-H is a synthetic cannabinoid. When it appeared on the market, it was presented as something different from CBD, which is not psychoactive, and from THC, which is. Sellers marketed it for its strong effects, and it was described at the time as one of the most concentrated cannabinoids available, made from selected cannabis strains through a sophisticated extraction process.

Scientists were interested in it because it raised new questions about cannabis and its components. Its recent appearance prompted curiosity among researchers as well as among cannabis enthusiasts. Little research existed at the time on how it acts and what risks it carries.

The HHC-H molecule

HHC-H is a cannabis derivative identified only recently. Its structure differs from that of THC, and those structural differences can change the way it interacts with the receptors of the endocannabinoid system in the human body. Beyond that, the data are thin, and claims about its safety or usefulness made in 2024 rested on no solid evidence.

How was HHC-H regulated?

Rules on HHC-H varied considerably from one country to another. Some tolerated it under conditions, others banned it outright. In May 2024, sellers in France presented it as permitted as long as the product contained less than 0.3% THC.

That position did not last. In June 2024, France prohibited the production, sale and possession of HHCH, together with H4CBD, HHCPO, THCP and VMAC, following concerns raised by the ANSM, the French medicines safety agency. Anyone following the French market, or buying from it, should treat HHC-H as a banned substance in France.

HHC-H at Deli Hemp in 2024

In May 2024, before the ban, our range included HHC-H pre-rolls, and HHC-H flowers and vapes had been announced. Those products belonged to that period. Our core business remains hemp products that comply with French law (delta-9-THC ≤ 0.3%), such as CBD flowers and CBD oils.

Even for those, rules differ from country to country and can be stricter than in France. In the UK, the status of hemp flower is still contested, so check what you may resell where you trade before ordering.

What retailers can learn from HHC-H

The HHC-H episode followed a familiar pattern. A new molecule appears, demand rises fast, and the regulator steps in, sometimes within weeks of the first articles about it.

For a shop, the lesson is caution. Before listing a new cannabinoid, ask for the batch analysis, find out whether the molecule is already classified anywhere in Europe, and keep an eye on announcements from your national authorities. A product that disappears from the law overnight leaves you with stock you cannot sell.

Frequently asked questions

Is HHC-H legal in France?

No. HHCH was among the molecules France banned from 3 June 2024, along with H4CBD, HHCPO, THCP and VMAC. Production, sale and possession are prohibited.

Is HHC-H the same as HHC?

No. HHC-H belongs to the same family, the hexahydrocannabinols, but it is a different molecule. Each compound has its own legal status, which can change quickly.
